Bostik was delighted to welcome Carpets & Floors Cork to the Bostik Academy. Bostik’s technical team trained participants in floor preparation and application procedures in a one-day course. Carpets & Floors Cork required training in floor preparation, priming, levelling compounds and soft flooring adhesives.
Course Structure
Bostik Academy training programmes demonstrate a selection of Bostik products tailored to suit installation needs. Our technical team use physical demonstrations with products to show participants correct application methods and share the latest professional industry knowledge. Training concentrated on moisture content, DPMs, primers, levelling compounds, underfloor heating and soft flooring adhesives.
The Bostik technical team selected the following products to demonstrate based on Carpets & Floors Cork’s installation requirements: Bostik One Coat Membrane, Bostik E336, Bostik Universal Primer, Bostik Grip A936, Bostik SL C500 Latex, Bostik Stix A100 Project, Bostik Stix A600, Bostik A800.
Technical Advice
At the Bostik Academy, our Academy technicians discuss techniques and skills that we have acquired through experience to assist installers in future projects during the course.
Important technical advice from this course included:
— Preparing a floor with high moisture content
- We recommend our trainees use the calcium carbide method. The Bostik technical team demonstrated the preparation method for a core sample of floor material to ascertain an accurate moisture level measurement.
— Applying DPMs and primers.
- We started by showing the difference in mixing processes between DPMs and primers, including the optimal paddle mixers. The technical team demonstrated the most suitable roller sleeves to achieve a perfect finish supported with a valid rationale.
— Best practice when applying levelling compounds.
- The Bostik technical team began by exhibiting the best troweling techniques to achieve optimal levelling.
- We also demonstrated how to use a spiked roller. The team has picked up specific skills over the years that they teach only on Bostik Academy courses.
— Selecting the suitable adhesive trowel and application for Bostik soft flooring adhesives.
- Bostik soft flooring adhesive buckets outline the optimal trowel to use based on the application area. Our technical team demonstrate where these will be found on the packaging.
- The Bostik technical team explained in depth the reasoning behind using one particular trowel over another in a specific scenario.

The most frequently asked questions in this session were about preparing a floor before levelling.
We advise always checking the moisture content of the subfloor. Results will determine if using a DPM is necessary and, if not, dictates what primer is required for the surface. The depth of floor levelling required answers to which levelling compound you should use.
